Bangladeshi smugglers attack and injure 3 BSF jawans near international border in West Bengal

New Delhi: Three Border Security Force personnel have been injured in an attack by Bangladeshi smugglers along the India-Bangladesh international border in West Bengal.

At about 3.30am, a special ambush was laid in the area of responsibility of the border outpost of Bansghata, in the North 24 Parganas district of the state during the intervening night of July 3-4, after seeing the movement of 10–12 Bangladeshi smugglers near the fence.

“The ambush party challenged to stop and maintain the sanctity of IB (international border) but the smugglers/miscreants did not pay any heed and encircled the ambush party and brutally attacked on the BSF party with bamboo sticks and ‘dah’ (machete),” the BSF said.

The ambush party fired one round of non-lethal weapon – initially to disperse them and save their own lives. The ambush party again had to fire four non-lethal rounds of towards the miscreants to push them back, after which the miscreants ran away towards Bangladesh side.” it added.

Three BSF men were injured in this attack. A packet containing eight kilograms of “ganja” or marijuana was seized from the site, it said.

BSF said that one or two of the attackers were injured in the firing by the BSF troops.
