Sitharaman to launch Tamil Nadu defence corridor on Jan 20

With an aim to give a boost to the defence corridor in Tamil Nadu, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will launch the project on January 20at Tiruchirappalli. “Tamil Nadu defence corridor is scheduled to be launched on January 20. The Raksha Mantri will be present on the occasion,” said Defence Procurement Secretary Ajay Kumar. Giving details about the event, the secretary said there would be announcement of new investment proposals, launch of some new defence products and a defence innovation hub to be inaugurated at Coimbatore. The corridor will link Chennai, Coimbatore, Hosur, Salem and Trichy with Bengaluru. On being asked about Tamil Nadu being chosen for the hub, Mr Kumar said, “The state is a major manufacturing state in the country. It is famous for automobile component, aero component and textiles.  It has a large number of private engineering colleges with huge talent pool.” Coimbatore District Small Scale Industrial Association (CDSSIA) which has 3000-4000 MSMEs registered, the government is trying to attract them into defence manufacturing. “The government is providing a maximum of Rs 20 crore for creating common platform for infrastructure creation. We are bringing the defence requirements and existing things together,” said the secretary. Last year in August, the government had launched Uttar Pradesh defence corridor in Aligarh with defence public sector unit and other private sector firms announced to invest a total of Rs 3,732 crore across the defence corridor in the state.
