New Delhi: The Border Roads Organization (BRO) achieved a major milestone by achieving breakthrough of the Sungal tunnel, the longest on the strategically important Akhnoor-Poonch National Highway (NH-144A) in Jammu & Kashmir, on Tuesday.

Spanning an impressive 2.79 kilometres, the Sungal tunnel represents a significant achievement for the BRO’s ongoing Project Sampark. This breakthrough paves the way for improved connectivity between the key border districts of Akhnoor, Rajouri, and Poonch.

The tunnel’s construction is part of a larger effort to upgrade the entire 200-kilometre Jammu-Poonch stretch, also known as the Golden Arc Road. This vital highway serves as a crucial link for both civilian movement and military deployment in the region.

“This breakthrough is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our engineers and labourers,” said a BRO spokesperson. “The Sungal tunnel will significantly improve travel time and ensure all-weather connectivity on this critical route.”

The Sungal tunnel joins the recently completed 700-metre Naushera tunnel as part of a network of tunnels planned for the Golden Arc Road. These tunnels will bypass treacherous mountain passes, reducing travel time and enhancing safety for commuters.

The BRO’s accomplishment is expected to boost regional trade and economic activity. Improved connectivity will also facilitate faster troop movement and logistical support for the armed forces stationed along the line of control (LoC).

Experts said the completion of the Sungal tunnel is a major step forward in strengthening border infrastructure and believe that the project will significantly enhance India’s strategic posture in the region.

With the Sungal tunnel breakthrough, Project Sampark is on track for completion by 2026, ahead of its initial deadline.
