Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday made a strong pitch for indigenization in defence manufacturing, saying it was on the top of the Modi government’s agenda. Speaking at DRDO award presentation ceremony, she said the emphasis on indigenization has been reiterated and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi was pushing for it since the BJP-led government came to power in 2014.  She said the aim was to make the flagship programme “Make in India’’ successful so that India emerges as a large manufacturing hub. Given the situation of India being one the largest procurer of defence equipment, Ms. Sitharaman said the emphasis on indigenization was all the more needed in the larger interest of manufacturing. “Manufacturing for defence, keeping indigensation as its top consideration has got to be on top of the agenda and the manufacturing cannot be continuously and constantly happen by borrowing the technology and that is where the DRDO’s research and development plays a very critical role,’’ she said. The Defence Minister said, “We really have to have the drive for innovation and for making sure that the innovation is few of the things that we do.’’ She also conferred awards to several scientists for their outstanding performance in the field of science and technology. Life Time Achievement was given to former DRDO Chairman VK Saraswat for 2017. Besides, other 17 scientists were also awarded on the occasion. Bengaluru-based Centre for air borne System was adjudged as Silicon Trophy while the Solid State Physics Laboratory was given Titanium trophy.
