Secunderabad: The chief of defence staff, General Anil Chauhan, described Operation Sindoor as exemplifying synergy between the country’s three armed services. Addressing participants of the 21st Higher Defence Management Course and senior officers at the College of Defence Management in Secunderabad, on Sunday, Chauhan outlined how the operation demonstrated the effectiveness of India’s evolving joint military capabilities in responding to cross-border terrorism.

The operation targeted nine sites across Pakistani-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan’s Punjab province in response to terrorist attacks, including the Pahalgam incident. Military analysts have noted that the operation represented “a calibrated use of force, intended to signal resolve, degrade terrorist infrastructure, and demonstrate capability – without crossing the line into broader war.”

The CDS emphasized the importance of comprehensive capability development and self-reliance in defence manufacturing during his address on national security architecture and higher defence management. He outlined the evolution of India’s defence organization structure, highlighting achievements of the Department of Military Affairs and the implementation of reforms including organizational restructuring.

Gen Chauhan stressed the need for in-depth understanding of transformative changes being pursued in the military to address disruptive developments in technology-driven modern warfare. He detailed the roadmap for establishing theatre commands to enhance joint capability and underscored the importance of continued reforms, coordination and adaptability to meet evolving national security challenges.

Joint logistics initiative launched

The defence chief released the “Joint Primer for Integrated Logistics” – a comprehensive guide prepared by the College of Defence Management. The document aims to enhance triservice logistics coordination by focusing on core areas including digitization, common provisioning and procurement, and integration with the national logistics framework.

“Logistics is the backbone of military operations and integration of logistical processes across the armed forces is critical to achieving strategic objectives,” Gen Chauhan said. The primer marks a step towards modernizing logistics systems to ensure the armed forces remain equipped and prepared for any challenge.

Green initiative at college

The CDS also inaugurated a “smart bike” public bicycle-sharing facility at the college, developed in collaboration with Smart Bike Mobility Pvt Ltd. The initiative provides convenient access to eco-friendly e-bicycles for daily commutation, which reflects the institution’s commitment to sustainable practices and healthy lifestyle alternatives.

The commandant of the College of Defence Management, Major General Harsh Chhibber, briefed attendees on recent initiatives in professional military education designed to shape future strategic leadership of the armed forces.

The Higher Defence Management Course is the core programme of the College of Defence Management, a 44-week residential course for selected officers of colonel rank and equivalent from the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, paramilitary forces, and civilian officers from the Ministry of Defence. Since 1994, participants have been awarded the degree of Master of Management Studies by Osmania University.

The ongoing 44-week course includes 167 participants, including 12 officers from friendly nations, reinforcing India’s commitment to regional cooperation and military diplomacy.

The College of Defence Management, established as a premier triservice institution, continues to play a pivotal role in equipping senior officers with contemporary management skills essential for higher leadership roles in an increasingly complex security environment.
