Foreign cigarette worth Rs 2.47 crore recovered in Mizoram

Champhai: In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles recovered 190 cases of foreign origin cigarette worth Rs 2.47 crore in General Area New Zotlang of Champhai district on Wednesday.

Based upon the specific intelligence input, a joint team of Assam Rifles and Custom Preventive Force, Champhai carried out the operation.

The Assam Rifles team recovered the items which were dumped in General Area New Zotlang.

The seized items were handed over to Customs department, Champhai on the same day for further legal proceedings.

“Ongoing smuggling of foreign origin cigarette is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar Border,” an official said.

“Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the ‘Sentinels of Northeast’ have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram.”
