New Delhi: Amidst allegations by the opposition that the armed forces are being politicized, Newly-appointed Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat on Wednesday said that the armed forces stay away from politics and work as per the directives of the government of the day.

“We keep ourselves away from politics. We act according to the directives of the government of the day,” he said.

In his first interaction with the mediapersons after becoming the first CDS, Gen Rawat said his aim would be to integrate the efforts being made by the three services and work as a team.

He added that he would also focus on ensuring the best and optimal use of resources provided to the three services.

“As team, we will work towards a goal where 1+1+1 is either five or seven and not three. What I mean is, synergized effort should not be the sum of the whole, it should be much more. And we have to achieve that through integration,” the CDS added.

Gen Rawat also said his head feels lighter in the peaked cap after wearing the Gorkha hat for 41years.
