New Delhi: Kanpur-based defence technology company MKU Ltd is set to deepen its presence in Africa with a new manufacturing facility in Morocco, taking its nearly five-year engagement with the North African country from supplying defence equipment to local production.

The proposed plant in the SGZID Zone at Nouasser will manufacture electro-optical systems and personal protection equipment for Morocco as well as markets across Africa and Europe. The facility will produce products from MKU’s two principal portfolios including Netro Optronics and Kavro Protection.

According to the company announcement, the project represents a significant new phase in its relationship with Morocco.

“MKU’s growing partnership with Morocco is entering a new chapter with an upcoming manufacturing facility in the SGZID Zone, marking an important step towards strengthening local capabilities in advanced electro-optics and personal protection solutions, including helmets, body armour and shields,” the company said.

The move is significant for MKU, which has supplied optronics and personal protection equipment to the Moroccan armed forces over the past five years. And, now, the planned facility will bring a portion of that production closer to the customer while giving the company a manufacturing base from which to serve other international markets.

The Netro portfolio includes multi-sensor electro-optical systems designed for surveillance, reconnaissance, situational awareness and target acquisition. Under its Kavro range, MKU manufactures ballistic helmets, body armour, shields and armour solutions for military platforms.

The company also plans to transfer production know-how and technical capabilities to Morocco, creating opportunities for skilled employment among engineers, technicians and other manufacturing professionals.

The development places the company at the centre of a wider expansion of India’s defence-industrial engagement with Africa. Morocco has increasingly positioned itself as a manufacturing and logistics bridge connecting Africa, Europe and the Middle East, making it an attractive location for Indian companies seeking overseas production and export opportunities.

The latest development also comes against the backdrop of a broader strengthening of India-Morocco defence relations. The visit of India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Morocco in September 2025 is proof of India’s growing strategic and industrial ties with the African continent.

During the visit, India and Morocco moved to strengthen institutional defence cooperation, including collaboration in areas such as training, military exchanges, defence manufacturing and technology. The visit also highlighted New Delhi’s growing emphasis on partnerships with African countries that go beyond the conventional sale of defence equipment.

That approach is increasingly visible in India’s expanding defence-industrial footprint across the continent, where joint manufacturing, technology transfer, training and capacity building are emerging as important components of bilateral relationships.

MKU’s Morocco project follows another landmark Indian investment in the country by Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL). Tata has established a facility near Casablanca for manufacturing the WhAP 8x8 wheeled armoured platform, developed through collaboration involving Tata and India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation.

The Tata project demonstrated the potential for Indian defence companies to establish production capabilities in Africa rather than relying solely on exports from India.

Morocco as a gateway to Africa

For MKU, the Moroccan facility could serve a purpose beyond meeting the requirements of the country’s armed forces. The company said products manufactured there will be available to partner forces across Africa and Europe, potentially making Morocco an important export base for its international business.

The Moroccan project also reflects a broader shift in India’s defence diplomacy in Africa. New Delhi has increasingly sought to position Indian defence capabilities around the principles of partnership, local capacity building and technology cooperation, rather than simply equipment sales.

This has acquired greater strategic relevance as African countries seek to modernise their armed forces while maintaining diversified defence relationships.

India’s expanding military engagement with African nations, including exercises, training programmes, maritime cooperation and defence exports, is creating a larger ecosystem for Indian defence manufacturers.

With Tata already establishing an armoured-vehicle manufacturing presence in Morocco, MKU’s entry adds another layer to India’s emerging defence-industrial partnership with the country, and higlights how Indian companies are more and more looking to Africa not merely as a market, but as a partner in manufacturing and technology development.
