New Delhi: India and Japan on Tuesday discussed defence cooperation and security situation in the region.

“The Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had a telephonic conversation with the Minister of Defence of Japan Taro Kono today. He congratulated him on behalf of the India Government for the enthronement of the Emperor Naruhito,” the Ministry of Defence said.

Expressing satisfaction on the robust defence cooperation between both the nations, Mr Singh recalled his successful meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the then Defence Minister, Takeshi lwaya during his visit to Japan in September 2019.

Mr Singh will be visiting Bangkok next month to participate in the meeting of ASEAN’s Defence Ministers’ Plus, where he is scheduled to meet his Japanese counterpart.

The minister further expressed deep condolences for the loss of lives and property caused due to recent Typhoon Hagibis that hit Japan earlier this month.

He commended the Japanese government for its efforts to provide relief and succor to the people affected by the typhoon.
