President Trump, Melania pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Sabarmati Ashram

Ahmedabad: US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Sabarmati Ashram on Monday.

President Trump and his wife Melania arrived at Sabarmati Ashram where they were received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who gave them a tour of the ashram.

The visiting guests spun the ‘charkha' at Sabarmati Ashram.

The U.S. first couple also wrote their remarks in the visitor's book at the Ashram.

Mr Modi showed the three statues of monkeys, famously called Mahatma Gandhi's three monkeys,  and explained to the guests their significance.

The three wise monkeys -- one, Mizaru, is covering his eyes, the second, Kikazaru, is covering his ears and the third, Iwazaru, covers his mouth. Together, they depict the rule: 'See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.

President Trump began his first official visit to India with a grand and colourful welcome at the airport here.

Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Vijay Rupani were also present at the airport to welcome the visiting dignitaries.
