Col Yashdeep Sangwan of the Madras Regiment took over the command of a sector in The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). The officer has been posted as the DCOS since June 2108 and it is probably the first time that an officer posted as staff officer has been given command responsibility tenanted by a higher rank, a defence official said. MONUSCO which also has a Indian brigade in its ORBAT has been appreciative of the Indian contribution and the exceptional professionalism showcased by all ranks over the years, the official added. MONUSCO took over from an earlier UN peacekeeping operation on July 1, 2010. It was done in accordance with Security Council resolution 1925 of May 28 to reflect the new phase reached in the country. The new mission has been authorized to use all necessary means to carry out its mandate relating, among other things, to the protection of civilians, humanitarian personnel and human rights defenders under imminent threat of physical violence and to support the Government of the DRC in its stabilization and peace consolidation efforts.
