Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Ranbir Singh visits China

New Delhi: In an effort to furthering peace and tranquility between both nations, Indian Army’s Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Ranbir Singh on Wednesday visited China and met Commander of the PLA Ground Forces Gen Han Weiguo.

He is on a strategically significant  five day visit to China.

As per sources in the defence establishment, the Northern Army Commander also visited Western Theatre Command and held meeting with General Zhao Zongqi, Commaader Western Theatre Command (in Chengdu). This Theatre is responsible for front with India.

“The General is leading a high level military delegation which will hold talks with top Generals of the People's Liberation Army, as well as visit vital military and civil establishments in Beijing, Chengdu, Urumqi & Shanghai to exchange views on measures for furthering peace and tranquility,” the Indian Army said in a statement.

The visit comes close on the heels of Joint Military Exercise 'Hand-in Hand 2019’ recently held between the two Nations in the Eastern Theatre in Meghalaya.

Lt Gen Singh is also slated to visit military establishments and units in Urumqui and Shanghai.

“Both these Generals are directly dealing with forces operating against India. Meeting with them will help understand the sensitivities on ground and concerns of each other which often result into misunderstandings on the borders,” the sources added.

There has been a marked increase in mutual co-ordination between Armies of both the countries and a will to foster friendly relations between them.

In a historic meeting, Lt Gen Ranbir Singh called on Gen Han Weiguo, Commander of the PLA Ground Forces.

The two Generals discussed issues having strategic ramifications to include regional security environment, joint training and measures to enhance peace and tranquility along the borders.

Lt Gen Singh’s visit is the second ever such visit by Northern Army Commander to China, earlier being in 2015.

The visit will serve as a milestone by cementing the mutual ties between the two countries. This will achieve the twin aims of high level military co-operation and stabilizing the sensitive borders of both the countries, it added.
