New Delhi: In the wake of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, the United Nations secretary general, António Guterres, has called upon India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint and engage in dialogue to prevent further escalation. The attack, which claimed the lives of 27 tourists and a local pony-ride operator and injured over 20 others, has significantly heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed countries.

Condemning the terror attack, Guterres said, “I once again strongly condemn that attack and extend my condolences to the families of the victims.” He emphasized that “a military solution is no solution” and offered the UN’s assistance in facilitating peace between the two nations.

As India Sentinels had reported earlier, New Delhi has accused Islamabad of being involved in the attack and took several measures against the neighbouring country, including suspending the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty. On its part, Pakistan has denied any involvement, took countermeasures against India, including suspending the 1972 Shimla Agreement, and has called for a neutral investigation.

The UN security council has also urged both countries to de-escalate tensions and engage in dialogue. Pakistan, currently a non-permanent member of the UNSC, has sought international intervention, although the council has reportedly advised both nations to resolve their issues bilaterally.

The situation remains volatile, with exchanges of gunfire reported along the line of control (LoC). International actors, including the United States, Russia, and Iran, have expressed concern and called for calm. The United States has engaged in diplomatic efforts.

However, the tension doesn’t seem likely to ebb anytime soon. As reported earlier in the day, India will be conducting mock civil defence drills across 244 districts in the country on Wednesday to prepare its citizens for a full-scale war with Pakistan.
