New Delhi: In order to mark 76th anniversary of hoisting of Tricolour on Indian soil by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Ashwini Choubey on Monday unfurl the tricolour at the same spot in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The national flag was unfurled at ‘Netaji Flag Hoisting Memorial’ in Port Blair. On the occasion the minister also took salute.

It is pertinent to mention here that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also hoisted the tricolour last year.

“It was a proud moment for me. Andaman and Nicobar is a unique symbol of freedom movement. Its trembling and frightening the way the freedom fighters were treated during the independence movement. The fighters may have had faced torture but their courage was intact. I have imbibed a lot of positive energy by coming here,” Mr Choubey said.

The minister also said that Netaji was an important heritage for Indians. “The place is now called as Subhash Island where he had first hoisted the tricolour of independence. I have got a chance to unfurl it today, it’s a proud and happy moment for me,” he added.

Andaman and Nicobar Island Lt Governor Admiral DK Joshi (Retd), senior RSS functionary Indresh Kumar and others were present on the occasion.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was the first to reclaim liberation of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from the British in 1943.

The minister also visited the Cellular jail where freedom fighter Veer Savarkar was put in bar by the Britishers for his involvement in freedom movement. He paid his respect to ward in which Savarkar was kept.

“I was pained when I see the ward of 12*7 feet where he was kept. He was tortured for 10 years. I felt peace in his ward,” he said.

Later, Mr Choubey attended a programme organised by National Security Awareness Manch at Swaraj Island and lambasted at the opposition for spreading falsehood in public on Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

“The opposition is trying to instigate the public on CAA issue. This Act will be beneficial for the people of all faiths. This Act will give citizenship and not take anyone’s,” the minister added.
