Ladakh: In a momentous decision, India on Monday opened to tourists, Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest battlefield where Indian and Pakistani armies are deployed in eyeball to eyeball position for the past three decades.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh who is on visit to Ladakh announced the opening of the strategically important Siachen’s base camp and Kumar post for the tourists.

“Ladakh has tremendous potential in Tourism. Better connectivity in Ladakh would certainly bring tourists in large numbers.  The Siachen area is now open for tourists and tourism. From Siachen Base Camp to Kumar Post, the entire area has been opened for tourism purposes,” Mr Singh said in a tweet.

The Kumar Post is situated at a height of 18,875 ft. Tourists will be able to travel from the base camp at Partapur at a height of 11,000 feet to the Kumar Post.

This means that other than the annual expedition organized by the Army from the base camp to Kumar Post, tourists will also be able to travel independently in the strategically important area.
