New Delhi: The Indian Ocean Region Defence Ministers’ Conclave will take place on February 4. In the event, which will be held physically and virtually, over 25 ministers and delegates would participate.

An invitation was sent to 28 countries in which 18 will attend in person while the defence ministers of eight countries will participate in the event through virtual mode. Iran’s defence minister, Brigadier General Amir Hatami, will also be present in the conclave.

During the meeting, the defence ministers will discuss strategic and non-strategic issues, including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

The conclave comes at a time when China has upped its activities in the Indian Ocean Region, which is considered to be India’s backyard and where India has been a traditional security provider.
